New York Continuing Education Requirements

New York real estate licensees are required to complete 22.5 hours of continuing education in the 2-year period immediately preceding license renewal. 3 of these hours must pertain to Fair Housing and/or discrimination in the sale or rental of real property or an interest of real property and at least 1 hour must cover the Law of Agency. If a salesperson is within their first license term, they must complete 2 hours of Agency along with the other designated educational hours. All Empire Learning New York packages satisfy these requirements.

As of September 21, 2022, as part of the 22.5 hours of continuing education required to renew both real estate salespersons and brokers will be required to complete at least 2 hours of instruction pertaining to implicit bias awareness and at least 2 hours of cultural competency training. Implicit bias is defined as the attitudes or stereotypes that affect an individual’s understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. Cultural competency is defined as understanding cultural norms, preferences, and challenges within our diverse communities.

As of July 1, 2021, the 15-year real estate broker continuing education exemption was removed and all brokers are required to complete continuing education.

Renewal Information:

After completing the continuing education requirements, your license can be renewed 90 days prior to your license expiration date online at Please note that during the license renewal application you will be asked if your continuing education requirements have been met. Make sure to select Yes if you have completed your CE requirements.

If a licensee answers Yes, the renewal will be processed without further action needed. If a licensee answers No, either on purpose or accident, a hold is placed on the renewal until the student submits proof of CE in certificate form. You will then need to provide copies of your course completion certificates which can be accessed on your My Account page.

Licensees answering Yes may be randomly audited and asked to provide completion certificates.
