Who Needs to Renew Their Real Estate License?

All Minnesota real estate Salespersons and Brokers licenses expire on June 30 every 2 years. 

What Are the Minnesota Real Estate Continuing Education Requirements?

All Minnesota Salespersons and Brokers are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education in a two-year renewal period, with an annual requirement of 15 hours per year by June 15. The annual Required Module course must be completed as part of the 15 required hours. In addition, each licensee is required to complete 1 hour each of Agency Law and Fair Housing course topics in the two-year renewal period. Empire Learning offers complete 15-hour CE packages that include the Required Module for the 2025-2026 renewal period.

"Commercial-only" Brokers and Salespersons who are engaged solely in the commercial real estate business and whose commercial-only status has been verified with the Commerce Department through the required filing do not have to complete the Required Module, Agency Law, or Fair Housing courses, but must fulfill the continuing education credit hour requirements.  

When is the Minnesota Continuing Education Deadline?

A total of 15 hours of CE must be completed each year by June 15. For 2026, the Salesperson and Broker Required Module: Contracts is required and does not satisfy the 1 hour of Agency and 1 hour of Fair Housing requirements.

How Can I Complete my Minnesota Real Estate Continuing Education?

Continuing education courses in Minnesota may be completed live in person or webinar, or online.  All providers and courses must be approved by the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

Are There Other Continuing Education Requirements for Minnesota Online Courses?
Per Minnesota regulations:
  • licensees have a limit of 8 hours of completed coursework per calendar day. Empire Learning's system will automatically manage this for you.  
  • The seat-timer in the course will timeout if there is ten (10) minutes of inactivity. 
  • Licensees have unlimited attempts to complete the final exam but are not allowed to see the question and answer results of the exam.  
CE courses may not be repeated within a 2 year renewal cycle. You can log into your Pulse Portal account to verify your course completions and license expiration date to verify your course completions for each continuing education cycle.

This is my first renewal as a Salesperson or Broker. What do I need to do?
Minnesota Salespersons and Brokers renewing for the first time have the same 30 hour continuing education requirements as for all subsequent renewals. However, when a new broker or salesperson is licensed, their initial license period will be shorter than 12 months. No CE is due at the first June 30 following issuance of the initial license, but the full 30 hours must be completed by the second June 30 of the renewal period.

How do I know Empire Learning is an approved provider in Minnesota?
To verify our approval in Minnesota, go to Pulse Portal. Drop down to Minnesota Department of Commerce and Real Estate, then click on Approved Provider/Course Inquiry. Click on "Continuing Education" button at the top, then enter "Empire Learning" in the Provider field.

How does Minnesota verify my CE completion?
All schools are required to report course completions within 7 days of completion to Pulse Portal. Empire Learning reports completions every business day.

Renewal Information

It is the Primary Broker’s responsibility to renew all of the licenses that are due for renewal and associated with the real estate company before 11:59 PM Central time on June 30 of the applicable renewal year. The mass renewal can be done online at Pulse Portal.  For specific instructions about how to renew, go to the Minnesota Department of Commerce Renewal page. 

Individuals can verify their CE compliance at Pulse Portal by logging in and clicking on the “Review your CE Transcript” link. Empire Learning reports all completions by the following business day.
